Pilates Applications for the Pelvic Floor™

This course is included in our prenatal and postnatal courses and is a pre requisite for our SI Joint and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction course. This workshop is also geared towards anyone involved with caring for women during their pregnancies, birth and the postpartum period. You will learn about the function of the pelvic floor during this time and how you can help prepare your client for her birth and help her recover after the birth using movement and breath.

About the Program

This course is part of the new Women’s Health Certification that will be presented in the Fall of 2012. At this point instructors may take the course as an individual module.

PREREQUISITES

No knowledge of any exercise program is necessary although is helpful. We welcome Doulas, Childbirth educators, Yoga instructors, Pilates instructors, Fitness instructors, Pregnant and Postpartum women.

COURSE OUTLINE (approx. 6 hours)

Lecture

• Physiology of pregnancy/postpartum, the changes and how they affect the pelvic floor
• The anatomy of the pelvic floor muscles- includes ligaments and fascial attachments
• The function of the pelvic floor muscles
• The changes that occur during pregnancy, birth and postpartum
• The importance of correct exercising of the pelvic floor
• Medical interventions and the pelvic floor

Practical

• Finding the pelvic floor muscles using movement
• Using bony cuing to activate the pelvic floor
• Releasing and stretching the pelvic floor
• Toning and strengthening the pelvic floor
• Sample movement class to show how the pelvic floor is incorporated
• Discussion of exercise design to include both strength and flexibility of the pelvic floor
